Going Out

Karlsruhe has a lot to offer — but sometimes it takes a while to find what it is you are looking for. Check out the free monthly magazines and weekly newspapers with listings of events or the What's Up section of this website for events of interest to the expat population. If the listings says Eintritt frei, it means there is no charge.

If you would like to meet people while attending an event, consider taking the initiative and organizing it through the Karlsruhe English-Speaking Meet-Up Group — you never know who might show up!

The city is well served by public transportation — many buses & streetcars run throughout the night — check times here.

Restaurants in Karlsruhe are plentiful and not expensive. The city boasts a huge range of eating options from fast food (Imbiss) to up-market, upscale restaurants — you are sure to find what you need.  If you are interested in local German food, look here for explanations before you try something new — or just take the plunge and be surprised. We do not recommend specific restaurants and bars but suggest that you start your own investigations in these popular and central locations:

Gutenbergplatz - a 19th century square in the Weststadt which is both elegant and trendy.  Wonderful Farmer's market (Tues, Thurs & Sat) and nice evening atmosphere.

Ludwigsplatz a small square in the centre of town, surrounded by cafes and restaurants is usually buzzing with people.

Alternative and trendy Sudstadt is home to Werderplatz and just a little north near Markplatz is Lidellplatz. Both are well worth checking out and both have a great local feeling.
